{"id":3315,"date":"2021-06-15T23:07:03","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T23:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/?p=3315"},"modified":"2021-06-15T23:07:41","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T23:07:41","slug":"how-a-charity-tripled-donations-by-leveraging-reciprocity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/how-a-charity-tripled-donations-by-leveraging-reciprocity\/","title":{"rendered":"How A Charity Tripled Donations By Leveraging Reciprocity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reciprocity, it&#8217;s one of the big reasons why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/5-must-know-cognitive-biases-about-why-promotional-products-work\/\">promotional products work<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply means that if someone receives something they feel a desire to &#8220;return the favour&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charities looking to raise more money for their organisation should be aware of its power and how to utilise it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An experiment conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bi.team\/\">Behavioural Insights Team<\/a> showed that giving a packet of sweets in conjunction with sending a personal email increased the percentage of bankers that donated to the charity from 5% to 17%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across all trials they managed to raise over \u00a3500 000, however it&#8217;s estimated that if every employee received a personalised email and sweets they could instead have raised over \u00a31 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"415\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Promotional-Lollies.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Promotional-Lollies.png 415w, https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Promotional-Lollies-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Promotional-Lollies-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Experiment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Behavioural Insights team worked together with the team of Deutsche Bank in their London offices as a part of a fundraising campaign to support Help a Capital Child and Meningitis Research UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal was to get employees of the bank to donate a day of their salary to the charity.  (Also notice the clever way in which this is framed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The control group resulted in around 5% of people opting in.  Which increased to 11% when they were given some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.promotionproducts.com.au\/category\/giveaways\/confectionery\">promotional lollies<\/a> upon their arrival and 12% when they received a personalised email from the CEO that addressed them by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, by far and away the most effective strategy was sending a personalised email as well as giving the lollies.
