Most standard protein shaker bottles have a capacity between 400mL and 700mL. All of these sizes are large enough to have a standard shake, so it comes down to preference and what design you like. When in doubt we would suggest the 600mL or 700mL size so you'll always be covered.
To start things off, DO NOT leave your protein bottles for long periods of time without cleaning, you will save yourself a lot of work and discomfort! Now to removing the smell. We would suggest filling the bottle with a mix of baking soda and vinegar and then leaving it overnight. This should pretty well clear it up. You might also like to try placing damp ground coffee inside the cup and leaving it overnight and then washing thoroughly with soap and hot water.
