Pewter is an alloy made from antimony, copper, zinc, iron and predominantly tin. It dates way back to the 11th century and was traditionally used by the wealthy for domestic utensils. Nowadays it's more widely used in the promotional products sector and is useful as a soft yet durable metal that when moulded allows for a lot of detail and personalisation.
Pewter is usually handcrafted into items such as belt buckles, keyrings, plaques, coasters, medallions, paperweights and custom 3D figurines. All of the pewter options you see here are proudly Australian made.
Manufacturing pewter products is a hands-on process that involves creation via the casting method. The product is initially set in a natural rubber mould which is then heated up to 250 degrees Celcius. The mould is then put into a casting machine, which allows the pewter to reach every section of the product. It's then allowed to cool for between 5 and 10 minutes.
After the pewter has been cast it's now ready to be finished. This is done via a variety of hands-on steps which results in each piece being slightly unique. One process involves dipping the pewter into nitric acid to strip the metal back which then can be grinded or altered to create the desired finish.
